Locally, we have been to dim sum places in Oakland’s Chinatown area, and in or near the Ranch 99 complex out in El Cerrito that we like as much or more, and so it will be a while before we revisit East Ocean Seafood Restaurant. We will probably return for a midweek lunch at some point in the future, mixing items on the dim sum and the lunch menus. Looking at the online lunch menu, there were a number of dishes I wish we had tried.

I’m fond enough of dim sum that this is a place I would be willing to revisit, with a more targeted set of menu selections in mind. From a food perspective, the items we ordered or selected may not represent the best that the restaurant has to offer. Have you ever been to a restaurant where there seems to be an abundance of wait staff, all moving, but none of them really paying much attention to the tables and customers. It was fine, but not a dish I would wait for again. It was different from anything I have had before. My wife was ready to ask for the check and leave, but I wanted to be patient. After some effort, a waitress took our dessert order. We also decided to try a “dessert” item, the black sesame seed mochi. Perhaps it was something else I wouldn’t order it again intentionally. If that was indeed what we ordered, any taste of shrimp was too delicate for me to detect. The noodles were about 2 inches long, roundish, and not particularly flavorful.

We had a noodle dish, perhaps the shrimp rice noodles, that was on the dim sum menu. The pork buns were quite tasty, and probably my favorite item. The salt and pepper calamari was fine, but slightly overcooked. We tried five items, including a dessert. We ordered a number of additional items off the dim sum menu. Then the dim sum cart came by, and we selected some items, and the whole process that we had envisioned changed. I passed this to my wife, so that she could select items that she had a particular interest in. We received the dim sum menu, and I started to mark the items I was interested in trying. We arrived a bit before noon, and there was no problem finding parking or getting a table. We were on Alameda, and since we both love dim sum, and reviews were generally positive, we thought we would give it a try. It can take some time to find a parking spot, and there are parking meters on Webster Street.My wife and I visited East Ocean Seafood Restaurant on a recent Wednesday for lunch.

It's been full every time we've eaten here, so we usually park on the street. They have a small parking lot behind the restaurant. The restaurant specializes in seafood, but there are pork and vegetable dim sum dishes available also, as well as a few chicken and beef items. Despite the language barrier, we've never had a problem ordering here and we've always enjoyed our meal. The servers who bring the carts are friendly, although communication can be challenging for diners who don't speak Catonese. We've thought about coming here later in the day, but the crowds also seem to pick up as the day goes on, so there's a trade off. It's been our experience that some of the more interesting and creative dishes come out later in the morning (usually after we're stuffed). They have a good variety of dim sum dishes, and servers bring carts by your table frequently, so there is no waiting around between bites for the next offerings to arrive. They call your number when your table is ready, and a host or hostess shows you to your table. You sign in at the front desk when you enter, and they give you a number. We recently came here on Saturday morning, and the place was still busy, but we didn't have to wait long to be seated. (Regular lunch service begins at 11 a.m.) Their large dining room gets pretty crowded on Sunday mornings, but it's worth the wait. The restuarant opens for dim sum service at 10 a.m. It's a nice alternative to Sunday brunch. If some of the folks in your party don't want dim sum, they can also order off the menu. There are good dim sum restaurants in San Francisco, but this place is our favorite in the East Bay.
